They estimate that sales of the Kindle hardware might range near the 8 million mark, throw in the kabillions of iOS and Android based devices that use the Kindle app and you have a very large but unclear number of potential eBooks being read. So while the exact number is not known, Amazon has now come out and said they officially sell more eBooks than paperbacks.
This news follows earlier reports that eBook sales were outpacing hardcover sales as well.
'As for total numbers, all Amazon would say was that it currently has 810,000 books in the Kindle Store and that doesn't include the millions of free, out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books that are also available as e-books."-Source
So as Cnet observes this is not good news for brick and mortar retail businesses, and you'd have to guess, eventually not great for the future of getting your book printed on paper.
If less books are printed on paper and you are an avid reader you'll likely be forced into buying products that can read eBooks. eBook readers still claim "best experience" for reading books but many people when forced to buy hardware will opt for more versatile tablets. Hopefully that means our iPad 3s and next generations Android tablets will include better screen technology for reading text... and with any luck indoors and out.
